Greenville Bound

It may make me a homer, but for my money The V-Roys were one of the better live bands I've seen (Smokin' Dave and the Premo Dopes, The Who, and Cheap Trick are also on the list). Their first album (Just Add Ice) is brilliant, and the second suffers only in comparison to the first (I have a few Steve Earle issues).

This is a show from the Handlebar in Greenville, SC, which is surprisingly further from Charleston than a cursory inspection of a map lead me to believe. It was a long and loud trip in my Honda with a blown muffler. Fortunately, that was before some punks stole my stereo while I was coaching a high school basketball game, so we could drown out the tailpipe.

The Handlebar calls itself a "listening room" as opposed to a bar - there is no bar in the actual music room, so you don't get that constant clanking of bottles, which is nice.

This is the first of two shows I saw the V-Roys perform at the Handlebar, but the only one I taped. I wish I had a tape of the second - I ended up onstage in a glorious bright orange Phil Fulmer jacket playing drums on Cold Beer Hello.

Here's the video: The V-Roys Greenville SC 7-30-1999
