Explorers, Club, and Fire

Charleston pop-rockers The Explorers Club opened for Earth, Wind, and Fire at the North Charleston Coliseum on June 26th, 2012. I didn't have the greatest angles from which to shoot inside the press pit, but I tried several there and outside the boundaries, so there are periods of stable video and periods of random shots where I'm wandering the aisles. I think I panned across my forehead at least once. The audio is also correspondingly-random.

That's Why God Made The Flipcam

I had the pleasure of traveling to Raleigh NC this spring to meet a few Beach Boys and to enjoy a show on their reunion tour. I shot a few songs on a little flipcam - the picture is OK, but the sound is surprisingly good. At the end there's also a little nighttime footage of a classic tourist site that should be familiar to anyone who has traveled I-95.

I wish my DAW had a "remove audience out-of-time clapping" filter.

A Hard Morning's Shoot

Here's a random artifact of a trip I took to a Charlotte morning (7 AM!) TV show with The Explorers Club back in April. While shooting some tripod-mounted HD video I also wandered the studio with a little flip cam shooting some B-roll that I initially had planed to edit into the final cut a la A Hard Day's Night. General lethargy and slackness meant that I never used it, so here it is unedited. At the end there's a bonus scene with Atlanta Braves legend Dale Murphy, who was also visiting the studio for a TV appearance.

The Heavens Opened Tonight

I spent the weekend of April 20-22 traveling with Charleston pop-rock band The Explorers Club to a TV appearance and club date in Charlotte, NC, and then on to the National Mall in Washington DC for their Earth Day 2012 appearance. Unfortunately the event was mostly rained out, but surprisingly all of the bands that were scheduled (and a few that were unscheduled) played their sets. The headliners were Cheap Trick, and I was fortunate enough to be standing on stage left for the set and shot this video of their short but favorite-song-filled performance:

Now you know what it sounds like onstage at a Cheap Trick show (one in the pouring rain, to boot). I left some of the backstage video on just to demonstrate the swampy mess that was the event.

More Fun in the Summertime

Here's the second in this 1983 series. Not a ton that I need to hear again on this one, save the Crenshaw (which I love) and the Devo (which I'm glad exists more than I actually like it). The Steve Miller has a guitar "solo" that I like a lot - it's a far cry from his normal blues riffing.

Here Comes the Summer!

Celebrating the first day of summer vaction for the kiddies with this pretty good comp from 1983.
That first side is very good (even the PC is OK) and as long as I skip Rod I'm OK with the second side as well. The Parker is a revelation, as I probably haven't heard it in the nearly 30 years since it was a hit.
