The Key To This Is. . .

This 1982 smooth jazz album has a local (to me) connection, in that it was "Recorded live at Kiaweh Island (South Carolina) on April 27, 1982" by local a Charleston pianist. There's not a lot of internet information on her, though I did locate a church bulletin from 2014 indicating that she was playing a piano prelude, so she must still be somewhat active musically.

I'm not a big fan of the genre for straight listening, but this one stays nicely mellow throughout and thus makes for pretty good falling-asleep accompaniment.

Folk You

A short 1965 folkie cash-in album produced for Philco* by Columbia Special Products, with some well-known artists and a few lesser-knows, including The Back Porch Majority, a sort-of farm team for the The New Christy Minstrels. Luboff (and his choir) is kind of the ringer in this set.

*I don't know that it was actually the case, but I'd like to think that this album was given away with the purchase of a finely-finished hardwood Philco console stereo.

Getting in Shape

There has been a recent resurgence of interest in this early American folk singing form, initially spurred by the film Cold Mountain.

Previously I have posted my recordings of the annual singing held during Charleston's Piccolo Spoleto Festival:

2010
2011

This 1978 recording strikes a nice balance between the usual sacred harp recordings: restrained studio sessions or raw live singings.
